Harris County is the most populous county in Texas and one of the largest in the country. Its civil court system is divided into numbered district courts, each assigned to specific civil case types. Some courts focus on family law. Others handle general civil and commercial matters. The County Courts at Law add additional capacity for mid-range civil disputes. If your case involves amounts under $20,000, it may be assigned to a Justice of the Peace court instead.

Types of Civil Cases in Houston Courts

Houston courts handle a wide range of civil matters. The district courts take on the major litigation: personal injury, medical malpractice, commercial disputes, real estate matters, and wrongful death cases. Family law cases -- divorce, custody, child support, and adoption -- also go through the district courts. Probate matters like wills and estate administration go to the Harris County Probate Courts.

County Courts at Law handle civil cases in the mid-tier range. They cover cases between $200 and $200,000. Contract disputes, debt collection suits, and property damage claims often land in these courts. Small claims cases under $20,000 go to the Justice of the Peace courts, which are spread across Harris County's precincts.

Federal civil cases -- those involving federal law, constitutional claims, or parties from different states -- are handled by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, Houston Division. That court is located at 515 Rusk Street, Houston, TX 77002. Federal court records are available through PACER, the federal courts' online access system.
